"Receiving this award is a gracious reminder to me of how important and vital my actions and attitude are to the education of my students."
- Phuong Nguyen,
Mission Bend Elementary School

The world can be a dangerous place for our children and teaching personal safety skills has never been more important. They are often in situations that didn’t exist when we were young and lack an understanding of safety skills. Got 2B Safe! was developed in 2003 to provide teachers, parents and other educators with materials to teach children simple rules for personal safety.

  Safety Facts
"Children aged 11 to 17 are equally at risk of victimization. At the same time you are giving your older children more freedom, make sure they understand important safety rules as well." According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children

For Teachers

As a teacher, you know that children often lack the skills and judgment to practice effective personal safety. In a trusting environment, with directed, interesting and engaging materials, children can be taught what they need to know to help protect themselves against abduction and exploitation.

Got 2B Safe! can help your students learn specific rules that can help increase their personal safety. Throughout the program Four Rules are reinforced: Check First, Go With A Friend, It's My Body and Tell A Trusted Adult.

These rules help children develop the self-esteem and confidence necessary to stay as safe as possible in any potentially dangerous situation.

Children should always check with parents and guardians before accepting gifts, rides or invitations from anyone, including friends, acquaintances and people they don’t know.
Simple and straightforward - never go anywhere alone. Being with another person in public is safer and more fun.
Teach your children they have the right to say NO to any unwelcome, uncomfortable, or confusing touch or actions by others.
Teach your children to TELL a trusted adult - parent, teacher, etc. - if anyone or anything makes them feel scared, uncomfortable or confused.

For Principals

As a principal, you recognize the importance of child safety, and looking out for the personal safety of many students simultaneously. However, for the most part, as you look at child safety, most of the energy and focus is on finding kids once they are gone. Until the launch of the Got 2B Safe! program, there was no single comprehensive nationwide school-based program to prevent abduction in the first place.

Got 2B Safe! is an easy to implement program that your teachers can use to help students increase their personal safety. The program stresses Four Rules: Check First, Go With A Friend, It's My Body and Tell A Trusted Adult.

We hope you will share this program with the teachers at your school.

For Parents and Guardians

As parents and guardians, you are the most important and influential people in your children's lives. This also makes you the best source for safety information. The rules and procedures your family discusses and decides can help empower your child as he or she becomes more independent.

The Got 2B Safe! program is designed to reinforce Four Rules: Check First, Go With A Friend, It's My Body and Tell A Trusted Adult.

NCMEC also publishes many materials that contain tips and prevention strategies to help keep your child safer. For a complete list of these materials, visit www.missingkids.com. These materials include additional information for parents, guardians, grandparents, counselors and other professionals working with children.
