Being named as a grade prize winner in Honeywell's Got 2B Safe contest has been such a wonderful experience! What an honor to be recognized in the company of dedicated teachers, law enforcement agents, and national celebrities who share in Honeywell’s goal to make the world a safer place for kids! Visiting the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in Alexandria, Virginia, is an experience I will never forget. The energy and positive attitudes of these wonderful individuals amazed me! I realize how important it is for teachers to work with parents and community members to empower children to be strong and make safe decisions. Read More

I am so grateful for the experience and look forward to helping other teachers promote safety in their classrooms. With Honeywell International’s easy four-step safety program, I feel better prepared to help protect my students and children from abduction and exploitation.

Parker’s “Super Safety Mythbusters” idea incorporated the four rules of the Got 2B Safe! as its core curriculum. Parker’s 3rd grade students gathered in groups to role-play the four safety tips. One skit taught the safety tips correctly while the other skits did not; the remaining students “Super Safety Mythbusters” determined which part of the skits was correct and which were myths. Skits were videotaped and aired as four separate public safety announcements on the schools TV morning show.

Winning the Got2BSafe award has been a dream come true! In a time of rapidly diminishing state and district budgets, much is left to be desired in the classroom. The students and I are anxiously anticipating an amazing learning environment for the 2011-12 school year! I am appreciative for Honeywell's Hometown Solutions and the Got2BSafe program. My students have enjoyed the lessons focusing on safety, and we look forward to taking the lessons to the next level. Our webpage on safety is sure to be a hit with the entire school population. Thank you, Honeywell, for your interest in education, safety, the well-being of students and teachers, and your generous classroom make-over gifts! Read More

Kawamura implemented a solution to reinforce the Got 2B Safe! rules on the school’s website. Kawamura’s 6th graders learned the Got 2B Safe! rules and created an informational webpage in support of promoting safe behavior to be shared amongst fellow students, school officials, and parents. The webpage will be refreshed by students monthly with new articles, puzzles, skits, comics, podcasts and helpful internet connections.

I am overwhelmed with the generosity of Honeywell and the Got 2B Safe! program. I have been amazed at the ease of the entire process, from application to downloading the Got 2B Safe! online kit. I am so thankful to feel supported in this opportunity to promote student safety. This ready-to-implement program is perfect to teach year round safety to my second graders, and I have shared the message school wide. This program gives meaning to safety with a real-world approach. This lifelong lesson is one that will go forth with the students to make an impact long after the walls of my classroom. I will be forever grateful to the Got 2B Safe! program for the time, materials, and support it has afforded my classroom and me. Read More

If you would have been in my classroom in early Spring, you would have heard squeals of delight, seen huge group hugs, and a smile that went on for miles. That would have been me on the day I found out I was a grand-prize winner of the Honeywell Got 2B Safe! grant. It may sound cheesy, but this grant has changed my life. Receiving this grant has given me a new outlook on teaching, especially in the area of safety both online and 'real-life,' and I feel more inspired than ever to constantly become a better teacher for the kids. As a teacher, I have usually had to beg for all of my wants in the classroom, so to receive $10,000 just for myself – wow! Every single person I have worked with in this process has made this a truly pleasurable experience that I will remember for the rest of my life. Read More

Hodge instructed her 4th graders to develop a Got 2B Safe! Photostory with pictures taken of their trip to Dollywood Amusement Park. Students first learned the rules through in class skits, scenarios, and discussions. During the field trip, students captured pictures of themselves and/or friends showing rules to use in the creation of their photostory. Photostories were created and presented in school for all K-5 students for use to keep them safe at amusement parks during the summer.

What if I could win a $10,000 classroom makeover and, at the same time, influence the safety and well-being of children? The “what if” became a reality in the early spring of 2011 when I received a call from Honeywell International naming me as one of the five national Grand Prize winners in the “Honeywell Got 2B Safe!” contest. The selection of my narrative lesson plan about teaching the four basic rules of safety to children led to many incredible experiences. An invitation to be honored at the 2011 Hope Awards event in Washington, D.C. was the first part of recognizing the winning participants. There, I met other talented teacher finalists, and we were thrust into an exciting whirlwind of tours, interviews, banquets, and photo shots with entertainers such as John Walsh, Stephen Bishop, Tim Kang, and Nancy Grace. At the inspirational Hope Awards banquet the sincere commitment to protecting missing and exploited children by these celebrities and other sponsors was evident to everyone there. The Congressional breakfast better informed me about law enforcement’s contributions to the safety of children. The $10,000 from Honeywell International afforded me the opportunity to update my classroom and create an environment that can easily incorporate the rules of safety with other instruction. Most importantly, however, was a new personal awareness of a teacher’s vital role in the daily effort to keep children safe. I remain most grateful to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and to Honeywell International for teaching and empowering me to continue the goal of instruction about safety to the nation’s most precious resource, its children.

Lewis’ idea used 3rd grade student writings to reinforce rule themes that showcased special mascot characters. Characters identified to the four rules of Got 2B Safe! and offered a natural association to the lesson plan rules: Charley Check First, Frieda Friend, Bobby Body, and Addie Adult. Students created mascot stories, poems, fliers, skits, songs and graphics organizers demonstrating the message of the rules and shared them throughout the year with their school and community.
