While fifth graders are techno-savvy beings, their decision-making skills are still developing. By capitalizing on their love of technology, I work to equip my fifth graders with better judgment skills to help them transition into a new state of independence. Utilizing current Web 2.0 tools and technology, I provide engaging activities that reinforce the Got 2B Safe rules to protect them from exploitation. I have developed interactive white board activities that teach personal safety. Information found on the Got 2B Safe website has been incorporated: the 4 rules, the personal safety test, the what-would-you-do scenarios, and the Got 2B Safe checklist. While my emphasis is with fifth graders, my class and I work together sharing ways for all K-5 students to be safe. My students write and perform song parodies incorporating the 4 rules. Using our class Flip Cameras they video these performances to be played for the entire school during our morning live-broadcast announcements and later podcasts on school iPods. Read More

My students have each created a “voki,” sharing a personal safety tip and have posted them on my class Wikispace. My gifted students have created a safety blog on their Glogster account. As a partner with my students’ parents, I have linked the NCMEC’s website to my teacher webpage, as well as the Got 2B Safe program information for parents. In today’s world where “bad guys” are easily disguised, students need the trusted adults in their lives helping them to be smarter and better empowered so they can be safer.

Students in my third grade class are learning English and learning to live in a new country. It takes so much more than reading, writing and speaking skills to prepare my students to be successful in the world. They are desperately in need of real world skills and strategies. The Got2B Safe learning program enables my students to learn critical safety skills while learning English in a hands-on, engaging way that directly affects their lives and welfare. Within this safety unit, English language learners will learn the four safety rules: “Check first, Go with a Friend, It’s My Body and Tell a Trusted Adult.” Students will participate in reading, writing and discussing the four rules. After students are familiar with the vocabulary and concepts surrounding the rules, students will break into four small groups. Each group will focus on one safety rule. Groups will collaborate to write a script for a newscast. Read More

The goal of the newscast is to teach other Holaway students the facts and strategies they need to stay safe. Students will choose community members such as police officers, firefighters, principals or parents to interview as well. Students will act as newscasters and the final product will be videotaped and shown on the Holaway School Morning Announcements, which are shown in all classrooms. The video will also be shown at Holaway Parent Night. This will be a positive and life altering lesson that will stick with my students even after they leave my class.

I am so pleased and honored to have been a part of the Got 2B Safe! program. Winning this contest has been fun for me and an adventure for everyone in my school. When I show the makeover to my students I explain that, “Honeywell thinks it is so important to keep you safe that they sponsored this contest and gave us this prize!” Everyone has been awed by the generosity of this program.

As an elementary school counselor, it is important to have the students feel welcomed and comfortable when they visit with me individually, in small groups, or with their class. Sometimes they come to talk about events in their lives that are extremely upsetting, sad or frustrating. My students now have a relaxing, enjoyable space to come to. My room’s theme is sitting around a campfire.

The great outdoors is represented by trees and stars decorating the walls. The soft cushions look like stones and logs for the students to sit on. There is a child-sized sectional sofa for the students to relax on. The atmosphere is calming as a video of a crackling campfire plays on the 42” flat screen TV/monitor.

We sit in a cozy circle in front of the fire, talking, sharing ideas and learning. Everyone is equal in a circle – there is no front row. I want every child to feel that they are an important and integral part of the class. Learning about problem solving, getting along or being safe is something they all really anticipate now.

The technology added to my room allows me to present lessons in new, innovative ways. Using the TV/monitor to share power points, videos, or other material is an HD experience guaranteed to rivet the viewer’s attention to the presentation.

There are over 1,000 students in our school. Every one of those students will be in my classroom this year for guidance lessons. I am thrilled to have won the Got 2B Safe! program, and that I get to share it with so many wonderful students. I sincerely hope that each child utilizes my makeover as a gentle reminder that their personal safety is a priority for everyone.

The teacher will introduce the titles of the four different safety tips. In table groups students will brainstorm ideas of what this safety tip means to them. Each group will share their ideas with the whole class and the ideas will be recorded on the board underneath the title. Once students have brainstormed ideas and they have been recorded we will discuss the importance of sharing these safety tips with other children.

Students will then work in groups of four to create a visual image to illustrate a safety tip. They will use Comic Life to design a creative comic that will explain what the safety tip means. They will invent a character who will explain the safety tip in their cartoon. They will incorporate the ideas we brainstormed when we started this lesson about how to be safe. As a class we will have more than one illustration created on Comic Life for each safety tip.

We will share these four safety tips with other classes by giving each class a Got to Be Safe comic book. A big book with our comics will be created for the school library. To involve the community in the program our class will also visit our local police station and give them a copy of our comic book for them to share with other schools.

My fourth graders know bits and pieces about how to be safe, but their thoughts about safety are disconnected. This can be just as dangerous as not knowing about safety issues at all. I help my students connect the dots by incorporating the Got 2B Safe essentials into my curriculum by establishing a Safety Sleuths Program. First, students undergo training at my Safety Sleuths Academy. I give a pretest at the start of the academy. I teach four lessons, each on a Got 2B Safe rule: check first, go with a friend, it’s my body, tell a trusted adult. We review the lessons with relay games. A posttest is given at the end. We hold a graduation ceremony. Each student receives a certificate and a “Safety Sleuth” badge. Read More

After graduation, students check into the Safety Sleuth Headquarters where they are appointed to teams by the Safety Sleuth Squad Leader (teacher). Each team receives a briefcase filled with Got 2B Safe essentials, including suspect cards. Teams solve clues to figure out which suspects are disregarding the Got 2B Safe rules. They gather information from people in the community both face-to-face and via Skype and use GPS devices to solve clues through geocaching. Additional GPS devices and netbooks are desired for future investigations. Later, at Headquarters, the Squad Leader reveals which suspects are guilty of being unsafe. Finally, the Safety Sleuths create a PSA to encourage others to be safe.
