My rural, special education students need to learn the importance of safety in a way that is easy to remember and meaningful to them. In order to accomplish this, I will have a “Got-2-Be-Safe!-ty Fair” in my classroom. This Fair will be for all K-5 special education students, families and faculty/staff that wish to attend.

Preparation:
To begin, we will discuss one of the four safety rules at the onset of the week. We will discuss how the rule applies to our lives and then role play a few scenarios so the students will understand the importance of that day’s rule. Students will then be given the opportunity to make a poster, create a poem/rap, or design bookmarks that feature the four rules or work with a partner to write a skit pertaining to the day’s rule. I estimate we will spend two weeks on this classroom project.

The Fair:
On the day of the Fair, I will have student greeters at the door of our classroom handing out the bookmarks to the students. I will then allow the students to show off their posters, read their poems or raps and perform their skits. Bookmark creators will also be acknowledged then.

Follow Up:
As a follow up, I will take digital pictures of each student that will go on a “Got-2-Be-Safe!” mini-poster for their refrigerator at home. This mini-poster will include spots for the students to write in the four rules which we will then laminate.

Our elementary school teaches a health and wellness class. One week of the class focuses on safety. We will introduce students to the four safety skills by teaching our 'Got 2B Safe' song in the beginning of our safety week.

Students will learn about the four safety skills through many activities, including demonstrating what they have learned by role playing and creating a skit about how to be safe.

At the end of the week students will teach the whole school (and other schools and organizations within our community over the next couple of months) our 'Got 2B Safe' song and perform the safety skit for our school assembly. Read More

After the assembly each classroom will create a safety mural, showing the four safety skills learned. The murals will be distributed throughout the community to teach about safety. We will also record on video our students performing the safety skit and singing the 'Got 2B Safe' song. This video will be given to our local police department to use for school presentations in the future.

'Got 2B Safe'
Chorus: (2x)
Got 2B safe
Got 2B strong
Got 2 think smart
Got 2 take care of my body

Rap:
Got 2 check first with my parents
Got 2 always stay with a friend
Got 2 tell a trusted adult when I’m in doubt
Got 2 take care of my self
Got 2 do what I know is right
And then I know everything will all work out

Chorus (2x)

Being safe is a BIG DEAL. To help my students learn the safety rules of Check First, Go With a Friend, It's My Body, and Tell a Trusted Adult, we play a game of Deal or No Deal modeled after the popular TV show.

Before game day, I make 15 briefcases out of black construction paper.

Fifteen students stand in front of the room holding a case. Inside each case I created a scenario such as, "A friend invited me over after school and I decided to go because my parents are at work and won't miss me." Students in the audience would identify the actions of this kid as a NO DEAL. Read More

Other cases might say, "A middle school kid offered me some candy on the bus, but I said no thanks." The class would reply GOOD DEAL.

After all the cases have been opened, students would review all the safety rules and then go play the game in first and second grade classrooms so other students in our school will also learn the BIG DEAL about safety.

The four rules allow for effortless integration and flexibility to suit the needs of any class of students. When teaching young students, you must engage in repetitive but varied experiences when learning concepts that will expand as students grow in their understanding.

I would incorporate the four Got 2B Safe! rules throughout the school year.

I would focus on building comprehension through different projects so my students were comfortable and knowledgeable about when and how to use these rules. Read More

I would have students:

- Engage in daily discussion of the rules
- Illustrate pictures for a classroom display
- Compose a song and dance
- Apply the rules to seasonal safety
- Use writing as a creative tool to explore the rules (writing about a time that you used a rule, presenting a scenario and having students record a response, composing poems)
- Produce books that can be shared with others
- Design safety posters that explain the importance of the rules
- Role-play situations so students can practice finding their own voice to speak out if they’re ever in a dangerous situation
- Compose a play
- Share in a class discussion about the safety rules with law enforcement and firefighters.

By having several lessons that make my own students “teachers” of the Got 2B Safe! rules, they will gain a deeper understanding that will help them make quick decisions when needed.

I'd come up with a character who would teach the students about safety through rhythm and rhyme:

I’m Safety Sam and I’m here to say,
That being safe is the only way.
To grow into the best person you can be,
You’ve gotta live your life thinking sa-fe-ly.
“But please,” you ask, “Can you tell me how?”
Just follow these rules that I’m telling you now: Read More

Rule Number One is simple you see,
before you go with anyone, who is not family,
Check first with your parents or guardians,
Doesn’t matter where,
Doesn’t matter when.
Even if it is a relative or a friend.

Rule Number Two is safe and fun.
You must travel in twos,
And never as one.
It isn’t safe to be alone,
So before you leave,
Just pick up that phone.
A friend will be there,
You can count on that,
And if they can’t,
Just stay where you’re at.

Rule Number Three, is about one’s place,
To never invade your personal space.
You have the right to say,
“Please stay out of my comfort zone,” or
“I really would like it if you left me alone.”

Rule Number Four, is all about trust,
If it doesn’t feel right,
Telling someone’s a must!
A trusted adult will help you out,
It’s never your fault,
Just tell them about
Anyone or anything
Don’t be in doubt.

If you follow these rules,
I can promise one thing,
You’ll be happy with the peace and comfort safety brings.
