Once upon a time, not really so long ago, there was a little school. Now as it so happens, this school was very much like ours. The students were intelligent and hard working and the teachers were all loved and respected. School was a cool place to be and everyone felt safe and secure. But, just outside the walls of that little school lurked a danger. Although they knew about the danger, no one dared speak of it. The teachers did not teach the children rules to be safe and the parents were afraid to speak of it, lest their children be awakened in the middle of the night with horrible nightmares. It was not until one brave little student spoke up that safety became important. Read More

She had seen the danger up close and began to tell everyone what could happen if they were not careful. “CHECK FIRST”, she would say, “with your parents before you go. Don't go with people you don't know and always GO WITH A FRIEND. It is much safer. You have the right to say no. IT'S YOUR BODY. Don't let anyone touch you in a way that makes you uncomfortable. If you ever feel unsafe , TELL A TRUSTED ADULT like a parent, teacher or a police officer.” Eventually, people began to listen to the little girl. Parents and teachers began to teach the children safety rules and the children began to practice them. Soon this little school felt even safer because they knew how to deal with the dangers.

Teaching personal safety skills is very important for children today. The Got 2B Safe! Think Smart and Take Charge! program teaches children tools that can increase personal safety. I will integrate the program into the curriculum through four phases.

In Phase I, the Got 2B Safe! Think Smart and Take Charge! program will be introduced to my students’ parents by inviting them to the school for a presentation. I will give the parents an overview of the lessons that I will be teaching throughout the year and suggest valuable resources. Read More

During Phase II, I will engage the students in lessons using the Got 2B Safe! Think Smart and Take Charge! materials. Throughout the lessons, I will emphasize the “Four Rules Of Safety.”

For Phase III, we will have a series of safety speakers for a week during the school year. Each day, representatives from the local police and fire departments, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, or various community members will come to the school to offer helpful tips and valuable information.

The final phase will encompass a student safety contest. Students will be instructed to design a border for the school bulletin board that illustrates the “Four Rules Of Safety.” The winner will have their border displayed for the school year.

I could not have read about the Got 2B Safe! program at a better time! I am a 4th grade special education teacher who works with two general education teachers in New York. There are a total of 50 students in our Blended Program. Due to the already full curriculum, it is critical to find ways to integrate character and safety information into lessons.

After looking through the program I easily adjusted my plans to integrate Got 2B Safe! information into writing lessons and exercises that will benefit students, while teaching valuable information about safety. For example, I am beginning lessons on a required writing style and this contest essay happens to be a perfect model. At the same time, it will serve as an introduction to Got 2B Safe!. The activities and questions are great for daily journal responses. Read More

Another example of integrating Got 2B Safe! elements into our day is by using an overhead projector to enlarge posters of the “Four Rules Of Safety.” Specific students use the overhead projector to work on fine-motor skills and focusing on details. The Got 2B Safe! wall posters are ideal for this activity. Students can present the posters at Morning Program, where over 600 students gather in the gym to begin their day. Time is given each morning for presentations such as this. The “Four Rules Of Safety” will reinforce and give structure to other presentations given by local police and community helpers.

As a result of creating this program, Honeywell has made it possible to easily integrate the Got 2B Safe! program and teach it to the children.

STAY SAFE

Stay safe - all the way!
That's what this poem is here to say.
Our personal safety is number one.
In case of emergency, call 911.

When you're at the playground
At school or at the park,
Avoid shortcuts, go with a friend
And don't go after dark. Read More

If someone tries to give you
Candy or food
Just turn the other way
You don't have to be rude.

Tell a teacher or adult
If you're scared or in doubt.
Say NO to all actions
That might freak you out!

Most of my 10- and 11 year-old students leave school to empty, suburban Detroit homes where they lock themselves in. This leads to loneliness and they have found friendship on the internet. My students frequent chatrooms and communicate with Instant Messenger nightly. My students need to know how to apply the “Four Rules Of Safety” to all aspects of their lifestyle.

In order to directly impact my students, I will initiate a curriculum that includes the “Four Rules Of Safety” to include being safe on the Internet. My students will discuss the “Four Rules Of Safety” and scenarios where they need to apply the rules. Read More

Example:
Imani is participant on a chat site for kids. She knows people in “real life” but many live in other cities. Morgan will be coming through town and wants to get together. She asks Imani for her home phone number and address. Morgan suggests they meet at the mall, and Imani agrees, but wants Imani's home info anyway in case she is delayed. Do you think Imani made a good choice by saying she would meet Morgan? Should she give her home info out? How can you apply the “Four Rules Of Safety” to this situation to help Imani out?

Students will be given time to discuss and reflect on the situation. After careful discussion of the scenarios, students will create a commercial for their peers that include the “Four Rules Of Safety.” This commercial will be uploaded to the classroom website where their peers and parents can view it from home.
