2006 Got 2B Safe! Contest Winners

The Got 2B Safe! Contest recognizes those teachers with the greatest commitment to teaching child safety. Since 2005, nearly 4,000 teachers from across the U.S. have submitted lesson plans on implementing the Got 2B Safe! safety rules into their classrooms. To date, 20 Grand Prize winners and nearly 400 first prize winners have been recognized. Learn about their stories below.

Overview: We will begin with a KWL chart (what we Know, what we Want to know, what we have Learned), and discuss the importance of being assertive and following the four rules for safety.

Key Points: --Introducing the four rules for safety --Doing different role-playing situations --The students will also join with the students from another class, and look for someone who lives nearby to serve as a walking partner. --A local police officer will also come to reiterate what we've learned in class.

Lesson Plan: The lesson will begin with the aforementioned KWL chart, and then will transition to the introduction of the four points. We will then participate in various role-playing situations, and then share what we learned. The students will then work with another class, and make some new friends. The students will find someone who lives nearby, and they will exchange pertinent information (address, phone number, etc.) We will then work on the student activity sheets and pass out the parent letters to send home with the students. We will then take the safety test and then discuss how to make the right choices in real life. A local police officer will come and give a presentation on safety.

Lesson Plan:
Monday - Introduce, model, and discuss each of the four rules. Discuss the importance of safety and connect prior knowledge with each of the four rules. Send information home to have parents and students work out a plan in the event something needs to be discussed. This would include identifying a 'trusted adult.'
Tuesday - Read aloud book incorporating how the characters are using one of our rules.
Wednesday - Students will work together in small groups to create a 'rap' teaching others our Got 2B Safe rules. Have a member of the local police unit come in as guest speaker. Invite parents/guardians to come for the speaker.
Thursday - Class shares their raps and incorporates them into one. Finalize and practice as whole class.
Friday - Share rap on the morning announcements and volunteer to teach other students the song.

Our community police liaison officer will visit the classroom to share and demonstrate safety procedures. A parent public safety officer will visit also and discuss safety with the children. Students will then create posters about safety rules to be displayed in public areas of our school building. The third graders will then use the Got 2B Safe "situations" in activity two. They will work in small groups to discuss and present a skit to their classmates showing one of the "situations." Following all activities, a post test using the computer class performance system units will be administered and compared to the pre test.

Also on the blackboard will be the Check First rule. I will choose two student volunteers to use a puppet to act as themselves and another student to act as the parent. As the "stranger" puppet bearing a gift, I will approach the children, tell them I have more presents at my house and ask them to come with me. The students will then act out the correct procedure (asking their parents first). Small Groups- After this has been modeled to the class, children will take puppets and act out rule one. Repeat with rules two, three and four. Review by asking the students to choose one rule to draw and write about using the correct procedure. If time permits, students will share their work with the class.

Lesson Plan: (3 Days) Day 1 Students will be introduced to sensitive topic of "It's My Body" by reading aloud Golden Book "You Can Say NO!" Also the 4 rules for Personal Safety will be introduced. Day 2 Students will be broken into groups to practice and act out a teacher created scenario that reflects the incorrect and correct methods to react using the 4 rules. The finished portion of this will be recorded so it can be shared with other classes. Day 3 The third grade in our school will gather to view the tape. Students will discuss the scenarios given and the 4 Rules for Safety with a Springfield, NJ police officer present to share his advice. At the conclusion, students will write a short reflection paragraph demonstrating how this experience has made them a safer and more responsible child.
