Stacy Goebel
Bellair Elementary School, Glendale, AZ
Once upon a time, not really so long ago, there was a little school. Now as it so happens, this school was very much like ours. The students were intelligent and hard working and the teachers were all loved and respected. School was a cool place to be and everyone felt safe and secure. But, just outside the walls of that little school lurked a danger. Although they knew about the danger, no one dared speak of it. The teachers did not teach the children rules to be safe and the parents were afraid to speak of it, lest their children be awakened in the middle of the night with horrible nightmares. It was not until one brave little student spoke up that safety became important. She had seen the danger up close and began to tell everyone what could happen if they were not careful. “CHECK FIRST”, she would say, “with your parents before you go. Don't go with people you don't know and always GO WITH A FRIEND. It is much safer. You have the right to say no. IT'S YOUR BODY. Don't let anyone touch you in a way that makes you uncomfortable. If you ever feel unsafe , TELL A TRUSTED ADULT like a parent, teacher or a police officer.” Eventually, people began to listen to the little girl. Parents and teachers began to teach the children safety rules and the children began to practice them. Soon this little school felt even safer because they knew how to deal with the dangers.
