Most of my 10 and 11 year-old students leave school to empty suburban Detroit homes where they lock themselves in. This leads to loneliness and they have found friendship on the internet. My students frequent chatrooms and communicate with Instant Messenger nightly. My students need to know how to apply the “Four Rules Of Safety” to all aspects of their lifestyle.

In order to directly impact my students, I will initiate curriculum that includes the “Four Rules Of Safety” to include being safe on the Internet. My students will discuss the “Four Rules Of Safety” and scenarios where they need to apply the rules.

Example:
Imani is participant on a chat site for kids. She knows people in “real life” but many live in other cities. Morgan will be coming through town and wants to get together. She asks Imani for her home phone number and address. Morgan suggests they meet at the mall, and Imani agrees, but wants Imani's home info anyway in case she is delayed. Do you think Imani made a good choice by saying she would meet Morgan? Should she give her home info out? How can you apply the “Four Rules Of Safety” to this situation to help Imani out?

Students will be given time to discuss and reflect on the situation. After careful discussion of the scenarios, students will create a commercial for their peers that include the “Four Rules Of Safety”. This commercial will be uploaded to the classroom website where their peers and parents can view it from home.
